According to American Diabetes Association 25.8 million children and adults in the United States, that makes up 8.3% of population, have diabetes. Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus is a lifelong disease that affects the way your body uses food for energy. This means that the pancreas cannot make enough insulin resulting in high blood sugar levels.
Drugs that are used to treat type 2 diabetes belong to the incretin mimetics class. Incretin is a natural hormone which makes your body release insulin after eating, insulin lowers your blood sugar. Incretin mimetics “mimic” the activities of the incretin hormone by:
- encouraging your body to release insulin when your blood sugar level rises
- preventing the pancreas from producing to much glucagon
- slowing down the rate at which your stomach empties after eating
Findings reported by a group of academic researchers suggest an increased risk of pancreatitis and pre-cancerous cellular changes called pancreatic duct mataplasia in patients with type 2 diabetes treated with incretin mimetics drug class.
